Geraint Thomas concludes historic career at Tour of Britain, with supporters raising thousands for GTCT

Geraint Thomas concluded his iconic career over the weekend, riding from Newport’s Geraint Thomas National Velodrome of Wales and finishing through the streets of his hometown, Cardiff, as the Tour of Britain came to a close.

Thousands of fans lined the streets, waving Welsh flags and wearing Geraint face masks to celebrate the legend’s long, illustrious, and historic career.

One of only three Brits to win the Tour de France, G is also the only Welshman to do so; to accompany that famous yellow jersey, G has also topped countless other podiums across the globe and won Commonwealth Games gold for his country.

G’s supporters raise thousands in support of Geraint Thomas Cycling Trust

And to celebrate his outstanding career, the Geraint Thomas Cycling Trust delivered G’s Final Race Raffle around this year’s Tour of Britain – the last leg of a remarkable journey.

Courtesy of the generosity of some of G’s greatest supporters, we were able to offer some incredible prizes, with a brand new Pinarello bike, a two-of-a-kind pair of signed Quoc shoes (with G donning the other pair throughout the Tour of Britain), a signed Kask helmet, signed pairs of SunGod glasses, and a signed Ineos Grenadiers team bundle up for grabs.

Recipients of each of the five prizes have been contacted, and the prizes are in the process of being distributed to the winners.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters and G’s fans across the country and beyond, the GTCT was incredibly grateful and delighted to raise a a significant sum which will enable the charity to continue meeting its target

This fundraising will be vital in supporting even more young people to access cycling opportunities across England and Wales.

In recent months, the Trust has supported several individuals and groups to open up cycling opportunities.

  • Funding has helped Brighton-based charity Pedal People to deliver accessible cycle rides to young people with disability and health needs;
  • Cycling prospect Sam Stewart-Ball has been able to continue his exciting journey in the sport, with GTCT funding helping to cover race entries, travel and accommodation costs, for example;
  • Ty’n Y Wern Primary School, based around Caerphilly – just one area in which the local community gathered to cheer on G as he rode professionally for the final time – has continued its amazing commitment to active travel and ensuring each pupil has the opportunity to cycle, courtesy of GTCT support.

In its efforts of ensuring that there are no barriers to participation in cycling, the Trust is striving to get 5,000 kids on bikes by 2028. The generosity of so many as we celebrated G throughout the Tour of Britain will be vital in supporting this mission.

GTCT Chair, Adrian Coles, commented:

“The team at the Geraint Thomas Cycling Trust would like to extend its deep-felt gratitude to each and every person who bought a ticket for G’s Final Race Raffle, as well as the brands that donated the wonderful prizes on offer.

“It was fantastic to see so many take part, with an abundance of amazing prizes ensuring tickets sold out before G even crossed the finish line for the final time!

“We are thrilled at, and so thankful for, the success of the raffle, and are excited to utilise the significant sum raised to carry on supporting young people across the nation to access cycling opportunities.”
