Geraint Thomas Cycling Trust welcomes five new Trustees

The Geraint Thomas Cycling Trust is delighted to welcome five new members to the Board of Trustees.

The new arrivals take the number of Trustees involved with the Trust up to 11, following the departures of Owen Hathaway and Aled Lewis in January.

Joining the GTCT will be Rhodri Davies, Darren Mutter, Allan James, Tim Boag and Owen Rodgers.

Rhodri Davies has over 15 years’ experience working as a communications and PR professional in the third sector, civil service and higher education. Now based in Cardiff, he is originally from Llangrannog in Ceredigion and studied at Aberystwyth University.

He is also a trustee of Advocacy Matters, which supports adults with learning disabilities and autism in south Wales. When he’s not on his bike, first-language Welsh-speaker Rhodri is an avid sports fan and follows the Welsh football team.

“It’s great to have the chance to be involved with Geraint Thomas Cycling Trust,” stated Rhodri.

“The trust has accomplished some great things in the time it’s been running, and I’m looking forward to us supporting more initiatives over the coming years.”

Darren Mutter joins the Trust having spent over 25 years working with children and young people. With experience in both the public and private sectors, he is now a senior leader in local government and still provides services to vulnerable young people, an endeavour that he retains immense passion for.

Darren boasts significant experience and expertise in safeguarding, budget management, risk assessment & management, strategy, and grant management, and is very experienced in working within local political environments as well as liaising with government bodies and elected government officials on policy and legislation.

He has always held volunteer roles of some description, for example at a care leaver charity, an Armed Forces adoption charity, and for many years a WRU youth referee and assistant coach. Aside from that, he has completed numerous mass-participation cycling and running events, making many trips abroad on his bike.

“I am delighted to be involved with the GTCT as it combines two passions of mine, cycling and supporting young people,” Darren commented.

“Having had a lifelong professional career working with children and young people, this opportunity to support more young people to improve their health and well-being by getting on their bikes is extremely exciting for me.”

With nearly 13 years of experience in Sports Development, Allan James also joins the Board of Trustees. He has worked across two major sports in Wales and is currently a Facility Investment Manager at the Cymru Football Foundation.

Passionate about good governance, sustainability, and inclusion in Sport, Allan brings a strong track record of delivering programmes that have increased participation, improved access, and strengthened community engagement.

“I am truly excited to join the Board of Trustees at the Geraint Thomas Cycling Trust,” Allan affirmed.

“Having spent over 12 years working in sport and in supporting roles with other NGBs, I’ve witnessed its incredible ability to change lives, inspire communities, and unlock potential.

“I look forward to working alongside the other inspiring and skilled Trustees to amplify these positive impacts, and help more individuals experience the life-changing power of cycling.”

Tim Boag, a strong advocate of sporting initiatives which support broader participant development, also joins the Board with extensive leadership experience in financial services.

Having worked with business customers across a wide range of industries, he has Board experience in the social housing sector as well as financial services, and chaired the NatWest Southeast Board supporting disadvantaged communities.

Previously, he was involved at London Welsh RFC as a coach and Board Director of the amateur club, where he had a keen interest in the benefits of sport, particularly for younger age groups.

“I am privileged to be involved with the Trust, which has the opportunity to make a very positive impact for a meaningful number of young people,” he commented.

“Cycling, in its many forms, is the ideal activity to build confidence and foster personal development.

“I am very much looking forward to being part of this exciting opportunity and helping to extend the reach and impact of the Trust.”

Also joining the Board of Trustees is Owen Rodgers, passionate about sport, both on and off the field.

As CEO of Table Tennis Wales and a director at GB Table Tennis, he’s helping grow the game across the UK. And outside of work, Owen is an avid endurance athlete who’s completed eleven Ironman races. Whether he’s leading teams or tackling endurance challenges, Owen brings energy, commitment, and a love for sport to everything he does.

“As a lifelong cycling enthusiast, it is a great honour to be appointed as a trustee of the Geraint Thomas Cycling Trust,” he said.

“Cycling has had a positive impact on my life, and I am excited to now have the opportunity to encourage more children to experience the freedom, joy, and sense of achievement that this amazing and diverse sport can offer.

“Together, we can inspire the next generation of riders and help ensure that every child has the chance to discover the many benefits that cycling can bring.”

Chair of the Board of Trustees, Adrian Coles, added:

“We are thrilled to welcome five new faces to the Board of Trustees, and look forward to welcoming them in the coming weeks and months.

“It is fantastic to have been able to bring together such an array of areas of expertise and experience, which will help a great deal in achieving our mission of improving access to cycling.

“The Trust strives to provide opportunities to enjoy cycling to as many young people as possible and, together as a Board of Trustees, we look forward to collaborating and working towards our goal.”
